What is a Notice of Assessment?

A Notice of Assessment is a document provided from CRA when you have filed your tax return to explain how it was processed. Your Assessment

· Detailed document on how your tax return was processed.

· Sent to you either by mail of can be found on your CRA My Account

· Document that the CRA sends you after you file your taxes. It shows how much income you made, how much you paid and how much tax you owe (if any)

How to get my notice of assessment.

· Check CRA account or

· Email office and we will be happy to provide that information.

· Different ways to access Notice of Assessment

o If you have chosen the mail option, they will mail you a copy.

o You can call CRA to have them re-issue it

What if I don’t have a CRA for my account online? (NOA)

· You can request to send this information by mail. On your tax return you have the option in receiving your notice by mail.

· You can also call them to have it re-mailed.

What is My CRA Account?

· Account allows you to view your notice of assessment, view missing slips and make adjustments too your account.

· You can view all slips, T4, T5, etc. before waiting for them in the mail or from employees.

· In order to register you need the following information:

o Full name

o Full address

o Date of Birth

o Social Insurance Number

· Personal account used to manage taxes, benefits and credits.

· Online portal where you can access all your tax and benefits information. You can use it to check your refund status and manage your benefits payments.

What are the benefits of having a CRA login?

· View previous assessments, make changes to your past returns, as well as view all latest notices and letters from CRA.

How to login to my CRA Online Account (personal)

· Need to login to the CRA website and enter your username and password.

How to login to my CRA Business Account

· Need to login to your CRA business account and enter your business number, account number and security code.

How to register for my CRA online Account (personal through sign-in partner)

· Step 1: Click sign-in Partner Login/Registration

· Step 2: Login to your online banking using this as verification.

· Step 3: Enter your sin number, date of birth and current postal code.

· Step 4: Agree to the terms and you will receive your login details.

How to register for my CRA online Account (personal)

· Step 1: Open the CRA website and click on CRA Register

· Step 2: you will need to enter your SIN number.

· Step 3: Enter your postal code, birth date & information from your return (usually line 15000- total income)

· Step 4: The CRA will then mail you an access code within 10 days.

· Step 5: Confirm your postal code and then click next.

· Step 6: Make a User ID, password, confirm password and click next.

· Step 7: You will need to make security questions and answers.

· Step 8: Agree to the terms and conditions.

How to check refund status

· You can login to your CRA account and check the status of your tax return.

When can I expect my refund?

· CRA’s goal is to send your refund within

o 2 weeks, when you file online.

o 8 weeks, when you file a paper return.

· The CRA may take longer to process your return if your return is selected for a more detailed review.

Why haven’t I received my refund?

· The CRA may keep all or part of your refund if you,

o Owe or are about to owe an amount.

o Have certain outstanding government debts, such as student loans, EI and social assistance benefit overpayments.

o Have an outstanding GST return from a sole proprietorship or partnership.

o Have a refund of $2 or less.

How to change your address with CRA?

· You can change your home address using your My Account

· By mail of fax

· Calling 1-800-959-8281

· You can change it by filing your tax return with us.

o We can set your new address when you are filing and update your new address on your forms.

What is the deadline for filing my taxes?

· The deadline to file personal returns is April 30th, only if you owe money.

· If you are self-employed and you owe taxes, the tax is due April 30th. The business tax return itself is not due until June 15th.

· If you have a refund, then you do not need to file by April 30th.

How can I receive my T4 online?

· The fastest way to receive your T4 is having your employer forward you a copy. This can be done by email or physical mail.

· You can find your T4 on your CRA account. You can login and see your T4’s from all years as well as any other tax related slips.

· If you are unable to do either, then you can call CRA 1-800-959-8281, and they will be able to mail a copy to you.

Can I set up direct deposit on my CRA account?

· Our office can set up direct deposit with the client sending us a void cheque.

· You can also call the CRA to add direct deposit.

o The following information is needed to do so:

§ SIN number

§ Full name

§ Current address including postal code.

What is the GST Credit & when is it issued?

· GST credit is a non-taxable amount paid four times a year to individuals and families with lower income to help offset the good and services sales tax that they pay.

How to get GST Credit?

· In order to receive the GST credit, you need to file a tax return.
